Still remember
this entry where I blogged about keeping left on the escalator? I am proud to say that I have, save for a few lapses, always kept to the left side whenever I use the escalator ever since I made that promise in that entry. But every now and again, I am reminded of what a failure the campaign has been in Singapore and that it really deserves some relooking.
This evening (read: rush hour) I was standing on the left side of the descending escalator at Tiong Bahru MRT station. I was in no hurry because it was a few minutes away from the arrival of the east bound train I was going to take. At the same time, the west bound train has just arrived. Then I heard footsteps coming from behind. One lady, visibly very annoyed, was in a hurry to make her way down to catch that train but alas, her path was obstructed because many people chose to stand on the right side. To make things worse, a couple in front was occupying both 'lanes' and holding hands! And the worst part is, those people hogging the "expressway" did not even bother to give way! I think either they are not aware they should not be standing there, or they are just plain wicked. So the poor lady had to "excuse me" her way down. In the end, she missed the train narrowly, all thanks to very cooperative commuters on the escalator. This would definitely not have happened if she were in countries like Taiwan, Japan or Britain!
Therefore, at the risk of sounding holier than thou, or like an AUNTY according to TW, I appeal to my readers again:
please remember to keep left if you are not moving the next time you use the escalator!
